Pick up your pencil, charge up your charcoal, ink your nibs and join fellow sketchers at Sketch Coventry on Saturday 13th October, 10.30-3.30pm at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum. Bring your own drawing materials and meet in the Herbert Cafe, then move outside into Coventry City Centre to sketch what you see. If it is raining the event will continue in the Herbert, but hopefully the weather will be kind and the subject will be more fun to interpret outside.
The stimulus and inspiration on this occasion is the Journeys with “The Waste Land” exhibition currently in Gallery 6 at the Herbert. In turn this exhibition is inspired by T.S. Eliot’s poem “The Waste Land” so you may like to read and consider this beforehand. There are readings of the poem broadcast throughout the exhibition too.
As further background the recent programme on BBC 4 Return to TS Eliotland with AN Wilson screened on Monday 8th October can be found on iPlayer here. Wilson makes a connection with the poem and Eliot’s environment growing up in America, working in London and visiting Margate. The many voices and imagery in “The Waste Land” resonate with this experience.
