Journey of the Font

The Journey of the Font – Coventry Cathedral display.

This display is linked to the exhibition Journeys with “The Waste Land” in the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry, September 15th-November 18th 2018. It tells the story of the origin of the boulder which is to become the font, from Hebron in Palestine across countries and shipping routes to Coventry, in the aftermath of the Second World War. The stone was installed in the new Coventry Cathedral in 1962, built next to the ruins of the old cathedral, after the destruction of the city by bombs in 1940. This journey is linked to one of the themes of the art exhibition interpreted in response to Eliot’s major work written in 1921, in the aftermath of the First World War.
What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow
Out of this stony rubbish?

Another image from the book “Out of the Ashes” by Basil Spence and Henk Snoek.  Maybe this one should be in the display cabinet?
